If it's been a while since the motor has been tuned up it would be a good idea to replace the plugs, distributor cap, rotor, points (if it has them) and wires if they look cooked. You can also test the wires with an ohmeter if you have one. Make sure the connections on the ballast resistor and coil are tight and clean. Wouldn't hurt to check the action of the choke mechanism as well. Trying to trouble shoot without a fresh tune-up is tough. Good luck!
