I have an A833 behind my 440 in a 67 Coronet. Since I've had it I've had this problem. When I come out of 3 or 4 to neutral with my comp plus shifter, when I think its in neutral it is actually in gear. I have to hunt around to find neutral with my clutch released. My shifter is adjusted correctly so I'm thi king it may be the detent ball spring is either broken or weak. Any thoughts?

Also check your bolts securing the transmission arms to the shafts. If one is loose it can cause this. Or it could be a combination of loose nuts, worn/missing bushings, improper clips use to secure the rods - ie, don’t use cotter pins. Use a “G” clips. If room I also use a thin shim washer under the clip to get as solid a connection as possible.

Sometimes the brass shifting forks will wear in the transmission. When we raced them that was one of the modifications we did to use the newer steel shifting forks.

For your theory of an internal detent issue, remove the rods from the shift arms. Leave the arms in place. One at a time, move an arm into gear forward and back. Do both arms feel the same on effort? If so, detent stuff may be ok.

Are some of the holes in the levers egg-ed out? Bushings worn? .replace the levers or bushings as needed.

Easy peasy.

Most common is the rectangular hole for the shifter linkage lever being worn. Then it wobbles on the gear shift lever. Have someone move the shifter while yoy watch. Even if the nut is tigh it may still slip. A little mig weld in the hole and some filr work will fix it up.

You guys hit the nail on the head. Found my 3-4 trans lever had come loose and was wobbling. Trying to tighten it up I found that the treads were partially stripped on the shifter shaft allowing the nut to loosen. I used a die to rethread the damaged threads, added a couple of flat washers and was able to get it tight again. .
Thanx to all who responded.

IF you find that the repair doesn't hold, we repair the cam assemblies by replacing the entire shaft. You searched for gl2 - Mopar A833 4-Speed Transmission & Component Specialists
