Hello,

I am building a street strip machine. 68 charger... 383... What are the advantages disadvantages of advancing retarding the crank and or cam? Would this be helpful for me in my application? I am going with the 284. 484. purple shaft. with 906 heads. Any thoughts or input will be put to good use.

Thanks, Mike

IIRC there were two different grinds with those numbers.

Probably makes a difference which one you have.

Not sure if it applies to that cam, but lots of newer grinds have advance built in.

I used the Mopar Performance installation and degree video and followed the instructions for that cam.
I think that made the difference in how it ran.

I was VERY satisfied with how it ran, but it was hard to get a carb tuned correctly for it.
I ended up cobbling together parts from several different Holleys.

What's your CR?

When I first read the thread title, I thought sure it was gonna be another one about an un-knowldgeable auto parts store employee :)

Really need to know a LOT more info about the rest of the combination like CR, weight, gearing, induction....the whole deal before we can make eddycated :D suggestions but in a nut shell, advancing the cam brings the power in at lower rpm and retarding brings it in at higher rpm. It doesn't get you anymore or less (unless you are way off), it just moves it into a different rpm range. On most engines in a somewhat heavy car using using street gears, the older 284 cam usually got advanced and usually was shooting for 4 degrees more than what the cam card said but if it ended up at 3, it was a go. And you do plan on using a degree wheel and not just rely on the slots and dots, right?
