Alternator mounting

Thanks great pictures!!! Now should that alt be right up against that bottom mount

Steve, The alt fits tight up against the bottom bracket. Are you using the correct top bracket? Here is a pic of the top one.

Yes,i mean its the bracket that came off the car. There is something not right and im going to have to take everything off and start over. The bottom alt bracket really can fit on one way so if i leave the top bracket off and bolt the alt to the bottom bracket maybe that will help me figure it out. I'll let you know and thanks

Steve, if all else fails Bouchillon sells a kit for the alternator bracket that takes all the guesswork out. You may have mismatched parts but the BPE kit is nice because it looks oem and will have everything you need. I used it when I installed my 71 383.

Anyone have the lower spacer for the alt bracket shown in pic above ?

There is a space between the alternator and bottom bracket, maybe 5/16". The way the alternator sits, the pulleys seem to line up perfectly with the crank pulley. I don't remember what was there when i took engine apart. I found a spacer to make up the difference and it tightens up fine. I don't know if its because a different alt was used or they shoved some washers in there but it looks good now. Thanks for the help

I've got that lower bracket in use on my 440, and I was going to post my pic lol... and I've got 2 more of those lower alternator brackets hanging in my garage...

This engine came out of my 68 Charger. It is a 69 engine with AC and shows the alternator bracket bolted to the motor mount ear. Also shows the spacer behind the alternator mounting to the head. The upper bracket goes behind the front alternator ear. It takes two spacers, one between the alternator ears and one between the alternator and the head.

In that picture you can see the bottom bracket and the bolt that holds the alternator to it. Is there a spacer between the bracket and the alternator or is the bracket right up against the alternator.

When I put a stroked 440 in place of my dad's 383 in his 70' Challenger (ac car), I just swapped everything off the 383 to the 440 and didn't have a problem.

Steve ,,, hope you get a answer, , I have same trouble I was thinkin I lost a spacer,, ,, my belts line up , I just have the space your talking about,, I was thinking a few washers ,,,, washers would work , but I know thats not right,, I looked and looked read post ,, dam if I cant figure it out,, mines a 70 gtx 440 a/c car

Bone, there could have been washers there but i dont recall. Either way with a spacer i found, i put it in place and the alternator lines up perfectly with the AC and crank pully's. If i removed the spacer it wouldn't line up right. Now as you know there is only one way to mount that bottom alternator bracket. That "arm" that goes to the block boss for the motor mount can't go anywhere else. The only thing i can think of is somehow in the last 40 plus years its a different alternator? Is that possible? I don't know. I learned a lot tearing this car apart and im paying the price for it. Thank God i took a few pictures and baged a few nuts and bolts. I also lost stuff during a move. Next time this wont happen.. Thanks

Steve this the trouble I'm havering don't show up to good but my lower bracket has a gap image.jpg
