Am I seeing things?

Removed the trunk of my 1972 SSP project car for painting. This gave me a real birds eye view of the trunk area. It seems the two rear wheelwells are shaped and sized completely differently. The rear bottom seam of the passenger side well forms a straight line (90 degrees to the quarter panel). On the other hand, the rear bottom seam of the drivers side well is not straight, but makes a gentle curve/arc. The drivers side well also appears to extend farther back toward the rear bumper. If my observations are correct, how can the rear wheel wells not be mirror images of one another? Wierd.

That's been discussed here before.

Conclusion was either something to do with NASCAR, or a vapor canister, IIRC.

it was for nascar, back when they were truly "stock"cars, the right rear fender well was larger to allow more clearance for the right rear wheel

That's the same on my 73 RR but Nascar didn't race the satellite in 73.

Must likely you have left over 72 inner fender wells, mother mopar wasnt known for throwing out anything! if it will fit... use it !

When was your car built? 71 and earlier 72 have the fuel vapor in the back of the drivers fender well thus needing a larger fender well.

I have a 72 Charger, a 73 Satellite, and parted a 74 Charger last year.

I'm fairly certain the rear wells are the same all three years, but I can check.

...and yes, they did run a 73 Satellite body, just not anyone you'd likely know.

Not all vapor cans are in the wheel well just a large percentage and not all wheel tubs on the passenger side where the same those without the vapor can do not have the cutout for it.

even my 77 charger wheel well housings are the same as the 73.

All 71's and 72's built before April of 72 have the vapor tank in the drives side wheel well. After that they probably just decided to continue using that wheel housing on up.
April of 72 the tank was moved to the shock cross member and stayed there through 73. 74-78 it was in the fuel tank.

Hey Mark, I just have to throw this out there, and being serious. Have you ever thought about writing a book about all the things you know about the differences between mopar model years, makes, and whatnot!!!! That would be awesome!
