OK so I had my dana at the diff shop and they were having trouble setting it up, apparently at some point it spun the bearings causing some damage to the saddles as well as damage to the side of the case. so at first they said that the 5.38 gear set would not fit the spool, so they sold me a good used set of 4.10's and then they could not get those to set either. I went to mark willams website, ran the numbers I have for the spool and it does NOT give a break on the gear set so the shop said that I have a 4.10 and down spool but mark williams makes no mention as to what gear set this spool will fit.I am confused( not that that is difficult to do) is it that the housing was damaged to a point that the 5.38's required to many shims to set or do I simply have a 3 series spool?? the part number for the spool is 53190. I am fairly certain that I need another housing but a machinist friend wants to look at it first, something about using GM shims and milling that saddle mounts( kinda like a main bore, I think) as always thanks for the input.

yes Cranky that looks like the one I have but they did not have a part number so I cant be certain. the mark williams catalog does not list any range of gears.

Have you contacted strange. They helped me a lot trying to figure out which model I have of my locker.

4.10 is the 3/4 series carrier, the 5.38 fir the 4/5 series carrier, the split is at the 4.10 , above 4.10 is the 4/5 series carrier.

If the bearing spun the race and wore the mains that can be dealt with, usually the bearing spins on the carrier and that can also be dealt with.

Depending on manufacture the 4.10 is available to fit either a 3 series or 5 series. Richmond street gear fits a 5 series (69-0052-1). All others are 3 series. All pro sets fit a 5 series. Richmond's carrier numbering is not always correct.

I do know that the 5.38 gears are PRO gears they have been back cut, but I am still not sure what series the spool is, the part number does not specify whether it is a 3,4 or 5 series. I suppose it really does not matter as I am going to use the 4.10 gear. yesterday I was out at Firebird raceway for divisional event and spoke to a couple of machinist that I know and they said to hone the bore and use liquid shim to solve that spun bearing issue. I have never heard of this before, is it a viable repair?

I believe thats backwards, i never seen a street gear in 4.10 fit the 4/5 series carrier, but the pro gear does, and only some, street gear material gears usually never work that way the pro gears do, except for some odd companies making gears specifically to bypass the need for a carrier which motive does for some gm carriers.

I have never done/tried that before, i have machined the cap or modified the bearing race

I was told by a machinist friend liquid shim is good for anything 0.010 and less, so I am going to set up the race tonight and check the clearance. the diff shop said that they would narrow another housing for free since they did not catch the damage BEFORE they narrowed the housing. I may be hitting the wrecking yards this weekend.

I just spoke with Mark Williams tech dept, the 4 series spool measures 1-7/16 from the bearing seat to the ring gear seat. I will have to check that tonight, also they suggested that I use another housing.
