I didn't know better when I was young and put the purple shaft 284/0.484" cam in my near stock 318. It had a streemaster 4-bbl, 600 holley and headers. The rest of the '67 Coronet was stock.
It was a dog out of the hole (I didn't know the tuning tricks back then either), but around 3,000 RPM it would finally pickup and run hard.
I actually won many bracket races because the competition would usually catch me early (and maybe let off) before my engine came up in RPM, and then the unexpected power surge would either out run them or make then break out. I think it only ran in the mid/high 14's at 4,500 altitude.
