That poor car had a VERY sordid history............70 V code RR. The original 440 lost itself on I-5 late one night up near Stockton.
After I got out of the Navy in 74, I "got into" 4x4's and a Landcruiser. Started out with a 360 in the LC, meanwhile a 340 was in the RR. One of the dumbest stunts I ever did was to decide to sell the RR. I needed "something that ran" while I freshened up the 340, which was going into the LC. A friend had a ....."318"..... LOL turned out to be "the 50 dollar 273." Looked like hell. We put it in the car, which had had headers on the 340, and didn't even put the hood nor exhaust on the car to find out "if it actually ran." Ran like crap for about 5 miles, then finally blew out all the oil and didn't run too bad. This was a bone stock 2bbl 273, up against the original 18 spline 4 speed and 3.54 Dana.
So it "did run" and for awhile, was the DD. One day some friends and I were "going somewhere" and "Herbie" had this old 53 GMC with a "built" 250 Chev 6. Clifford 4 bbl, headers, 4 speed, he had a lot of money into that wreck. And down the highway we went, and Herbie decided to leave us in the RR. And guess what? Turns out the "50 dollar 273" KICKED HIS ***!!!

Yes, the picture of the 273 in the first posting was the 1965 four door Valiant bracket racer I took to Fremont Raceway back in the 1970's. Sold it to the Renteria Bros. (Morgan Hill) who raced it for 20 more years (1980-2000). Current owner is Kenny Moorhead.
