Anyone here take multivitamins?

Baloney. I don't believe this crap anymore. Eggs, coffee - depends on the day of the week. I'm gonna continue to take a daily. Right now, I'll finish this bag of chips and second screw driver and go to bed.

Like I think Dennis is saying, not everyone eats exactly healthy so the multi can't hurt. I'll continue to take them.

BTW that lady has the singularly worst set of earrings I have ever seen

“..A lot of you don’t drink, no smoke.
Some people here tonight, they don’t eat butter; no salt, no sugar, no lard. Cause they want to live, they give up that good stuff.. Neckbones, pig tails.
You gonna feel like a damn fool laying at the hospital dying of nothing”.

-Redd Foxx

Drinking too much alcohol blocks the bodies ability to absorb many vitamins so why waste the money on them? :D

You can't just lump in all Multivitamin's together certain multi's have a higher bioavailability and absorption rate than others... the majority on the market are trash the rest of the problem lies in that the good one's with a higher bioavailability rating are quite expensive and hard to maintain taking them several times a day and spending $200-$250/month on a vitamin.

Their usefulness also does play a big part on your diet and the amount/type of vitamins you consume naturally... essentially if you eat like crap at least you will get some benefit out of a multi but the other aspects of eating horribly may not allow you to see any noticeable benefits on the flip side if you consume a healthy vitamin rich diet then most likely your body won't take in and utilize all the extras.... There are benefits but rarely noticeable or "trackable"

Michael Savage went on off on this yesterday - and he does have a PHD in nutrition so might not be the worst guy to listen to regarding this. He pretty much said what you said.

This latest "study" is just quack science backed by big pharma and then spoonfed to a lazy media who regurgitates it to an even lazier public. JMHO of course.

I took them a few yeas ago than stopped. I might start taking them again, can't hurt. What your body doesn't absorb, you just piss it away.

My "background" if you can call it that (although I do something totally unrelated now) is in the health and fitness industry... gym owner for 4 years and managed the larger chain flagship health clubs in downtown Toronto for another 4 years so it's something I know a bit about.

I remember years ago there was a study that also said your body just basically passes them thru with very little to no actual benefits from a multi-vitamin, something like only 10% absorption rate IIRC, so if you take a vitamin with 200% of your daily need, you still only get 20%, I have several people in my family actually in the medical field PHD etc. My older sister Lori grad from UC Davis & my younger brother Mark, he's a Stanford grad., that confirmed that study, I would tend to believe them, they went to actual medical school... There is some benefits, but you would have to take so damn much, it wouldn't be really feasible... basically makes for expensive pee & crap...LOL... your better off just eating or drinking an actual meal, high in what ever vitamin your lacking... my $0.02 cents

most is marketing & hype/gimmicks, not all, but be very leery, consult your physician... about over promising & actual supported facts...

Budnick's that study may have been correct dependant of course on the multi's tested but not all Multivitamin's are created equal so varying brands/types have different rates of absorption.

I went back & edited/added stuff to that effect, I guess you posted before it was updated...

I should have added... My nephew that I raised, is a Kinesiology Degree major/grad from Sonoma State University too, now a Teacher & Basketball coach... he confirmed what we were talking about... I guess it's all relative...LOL....

They are saying vitamin and mineral supplements are not necessary if you have a healthy diet. Who in America has a healthy diet? Nobody I know.

On the other hand, have you seen the people that shop in health food stores?

yeah people with grey skin & anorexic looking... skin really loose, no muscle mass... the habitual runners are the absolute worse... anything mostly in moderation, doesn't hurt... my grandfather ate bacon everyday & he lived to 90 y/o, he smoked a cig. after every meal too, drank "a cocktail" every night, an hour or so before going to bed, called a "night cap" or "hot toddy" in the winter... maybe people should add a "fresh" dark green veggy to every dinner, maybe cut back on the double cheese burgers & supersized soda & supersized fries at lunch "everyday", make it a day or 2 even a week instead, will help many Americans... Maybe a piece of fruit or a few sticks of celery or carrots, instead of them supersized fries etc.... Just common sense or logic, it seems we have lost it all ability to reason today, remember the old 4 food groups deal, protein/meat, dairy/product, vegetable/fruits, grains/whole breads... It's the lazy/instant gratification society, take a pill for it, stay healthy type nonsense crap, you can lose weight, get rid of a head ache, cure depression, get a hard-on etc., when a little walking & or some exercise, will help allot of the ailments from sitting on your butt in that damn cubical all day, type hell we live in today, our kids are really screwed...LOL... It's not rocket science or brain surgery... You treat your body like crap, it will break down & you die, just like if you don't maintain your car, it will leave you stranded or it just dies... ok sermon over

I'll chime in with anecdotal, not scientific, evidence. My wife has high cholesterol and is on meds for it. Her dr also told her to take fish oil supplements high in Omega fatty acids. She did and her levels dropped significantly. She ran out and was lax about getting them again for a few months and her levels went back up. Started on the fish oils and they came back down. As for me, I take a multivitamin that has all sorts of phytonutrients, minerals and herbs. Also take an Omega oil supplement, 1000mg C and a chondroitin supplement for my bad elbows (injured in too much martial arts training). I have not been sick in 2 years. Call it coincidence, call it good genes, good hygiene, who knows. I'll keep taking them.
