I saw a documentary on The Battle of Britian, and one of the RAF pilots talked to had been shot down, and he was trapped for a while in his burning plane. By the time he got out, he was burned badly in his face. He had several surgeries into the '50s. He said that the hardest thing he went thru was learning to go to sleep without having eyelids. They finally did surgery to restore his eyelids , and he said they used skin "from the only place a man has that type of skin"
