Edit: the dog I walk is deaf, so he CANT be walked off leash. If he goes off on his own, I can't call him back. Same reason he can't go to the river, or a dog park.

Walking a dog or not, I carry a 38 with bird shot in it ...
 
Yeah, It's a pet peeve of mine I hate people that let their dogs run off leash
out in public, unless it's a dog park or beach etc. where it's allowed, legal...

Few years, maybe 12 + ago, when Buddy was still alive
I would do a daily walk around my community, like a couple miles
a lil' 80 home complex/subdivision, rural area up in the sticks
12 or so mile east from town...

Always seemed like a bunch of the younger people with dogs,
would let them roam everywhere willy nilly, off leash,
for a while it was a hard time to walk my dog/s,
always on leash, when out front or away from my house,
always, always on a leash
& because of these stupid people allowing theirs off leash
to just roam around, under no control, not very well trained either
causing havoc constantly...

I confronted a few of them, most were pretty cool about it, some argued
like they had no respect...
It was mostly the younger families, that moved up from the valley...
Thinking they could do whatever they wanted to do in the sticks...
They can't & need to be warned...
I told them I'm armed, licensed to carry (usually a 1911 of some sort),
& I almost always do...
(I've been stalked walking at night, by mountain lion & several coyotes a couple times
in the 20+ years been living here, best be safe than sorry)
&
I told them if threatened I won't hesitate to shoot their animal
(I'm not a lil' guy either, & I talk with a firm voice)
& if it/their animal/dogs or otherwise shows signs of aggression
or coming at me or my dog/s off leash, I will defend myself & my animal/s...

I get more ****/aggression from several Shepard's (Belgin & German),
Rotty's or a Doberman, even a Dane
off leash, than anything else, are the main aggressors, up here...
No fights yet with any of mine, my stance & voice maybe helps...
I did break up a couple fights over the years, not mine but dogs off leash crap...
There was a couple Shepards & a Dane (a not so gentle giant) that were notorious
troublemakers here... (they moved finally)

We do also have a couple families here with Staff's & American Pitty's,
they all are leash walkers too, older couples, they put in the time
& train their dogs, like I do...
Their dogs are a pleasure to be around, & walk with us regularly until they died...

Mostly friendly people up here, mostly older crowd, many are retired & respectful too
but a couple ********/former flatlanders 'still younger', that think since they don't live in a city
they can get away with whatever they want, like there's no law...

NO YOU CAN'T...

A bunch of the people that live in this lil' community, are LEOs, Sheriff dpt., CHP
or Ca. Fish & Game wardens... (like 1/4 of the people/families 20 something households)
They pretty much keep the rules of law compliant here, it's their home too,
I get along great with most everyone, & them too... (Car/truck & Jeep people)
They seem to know everyone by name too, (I do know a few, but nothing like them)
almost all of them do 'the neighborhood walk', stop & talk with people...

I don't stop & talk much I'm usually on a mission to get it done & get home...
Mostly in evenings in the spring, summer & fall (great families/folks) in nice weather
& most of the families here all know each other too, it's a close nit community,
great people for the most part...

Anyway, Buddy (one of my many Labs) was the friendliest dog ever,
but when on a leash & we were approached, (Elvis the next lab, he was really protective too)
if I didn't tell him/them it's OK, or I'd tighten up his leash,
he'd sometimes react & snarl like he was a protector,
like they were a threat, or it was territorial/protective of me or my dad I think...
Buddy, or Elvis He'd do the same when he was on my property,
in the garage or in my truck...
If he (or they) didn't like someone, he (they) usually had a great sense of good & bad...
Good people he seemed to not growl at, he knew... Dogs know...

My current pup Baron, lab he's 22 months old now, he likes everyone,
he's a big ol' wiggle butt, way too excited still...

When I have Magnum with me, and I go someplace he's not allowed, I've never actually seen anyone approach my truck while he's in it alone.
So, I don't know how protective he is. My guess is, he won't get approached much. I've never heard him bark when we are out and about, but anybody that would approach a strange German Shepherd in a truck is an idiot.
And I'm pretty sure the truck will be there when I get back.

Careful with that! We left my brothers bulldog in his new 90 Cummins for an hour once so we could get some dinner. The shifter knob was nicely chewed up when we got back, stubborn lil S$@(!
 
For a while, people that lived in a rental house down the street (the only one in the neighborhood that I'm aware of) had a pit bull or mix that they left outside in an unfenced yard.
How nice of them.
At the time I was walking on a regular basis and the dog would come to the edge of the road and growl in an extremely menacing way, and continue to growl until I was past the next yard.
I bet the neighbors loved that.
It would occasionally come as close as the middle of the street.
Although it never lunged or barked, it was very unsettling. I always thought "is this the day?".
The peole never bothered to come out to look, let alone scold the dog.
The second time I walked that way, on my return, I picked up the only thing I could find, a 24" stick.
Unfortunately, it was rotten and I could feel it would break if struck on anything.
I told myself- "act like it's solid and you will use it".
However, just the suggested confidence was enough to keep the dog from approaching any further than the yard edge.
Fortunately they moved about a few months later.

Yes, people in general, are that stupid.

Thor is a good dog, yes I do walk him off leash, the minute I see someone with or without a dog I call him and hook him to his leash. He will heal when I give the command, but want people and my dog to feel safe. I can stop hi at anytime, but there is always a chance he might not listen, that’s why I call him back and hook him up
 
In Fl this year over winter at the campground we stay at, a dog came out of a camper and killed another dog on leash before the owners could get them apart. It was a small dog on leash. Much bigger dog coming out of camper. Both were evicted from campground with no refund of the moneys for the three month stay paid in advance. Person was walking between campers not on the road. Yes people really are!
 
What’s with this new fad of bringing one’s dog into a store. Just last week, I saw one dog take a crap on the floor in Lowe’s and in Tractor Supply, I saw an unleashed male dog lift his leg and pee on a display of water bottles.

I bring my boy with me to any place he's allowed. He has been raised around other dogs, and both my gf and me 24/7 in az. When I go somewhere, he always still has company
In Cali, just me and him, his separation anxiety causes destruction in the house when left alone, and he's broken three chains when chained in the yard. (I absolutely HATE doing that to him, avoid if at all possible).
In the stores, where he is permitted, other than pulling too hard on his leash, he is very well behaved. I've never had one word of criticism about him. He's so pretty, everybody wants to pet him, but he is timid, they have to come to him, calling him obviously doesn't work. Since he is deaf, no matter where we go, he is ALWAYS on a leash. I can't understand any responsible dog owner letting his/her dog run loose in a store.

My dogs ignore everyone and dog walking down the street except one guy. It's like they sense something about him. They get the zap instead of beep when he comes by. Neighbors dogs bark or stare at him too.
