I did mine the same way took some work about 3 or 4 applications of jb weld but came out nice.

thanks Its a 70 ps column, I removed the interlock and jb welded the bottom collar to the middle one, modified the shaft to fit a u joint for my rack and pinion, has a real bearing on the end,

here is the only other pics I have of it finished.
