b body 833 trans

So when I look up the tail shaft numbers on my trans it appears to be 99538. I find no such number, I do find 99539 but I only have the front shift locarion, no rear locacion.

I'd be willing to bet that its 99539 which is a #308 bearing trans which uses the bigger bolt circle pattern and will not accept a small bearing retainer. Being a custom application, either run the bigger hole bellhousing or maybe even upgrade to a scatter shield possibly? I have never seen a #308 bearing trans with the smaller bearing retainer, only #307 bearing transmissions with the smaller bolt circle that can be upgraded to the bigger OD bearing retainer. Pop that retainer off the front with the 4 bolts and measure the bearing OD....it should be 3.543" in diameter. The smaller #307 bearing is 3.150" that uses the smaller bolt circle pattern on tat retainer. Be willing to bet your is the larger style.

doesn't 99539 have both front and rear shifter locations??? mime only has front!!!

Not sure on that, or when the 70 tranny for sure had both shifter locations, but you can identify what it is by measuring parts to be sure.

so a funny thing just happened!!! I went out to the shop to look at the trans again. it had plastic on the tail where the rear position would be. the guy I bought the trans from said it was a b body with front position only, I took his word for it. he also sent a e body tail shaft with it in case I wanted to switch. crazy!!!

First is, you can use either position for shifter location and purchase or make the linkage you need. Typical dodge trucks used the front mount so that may work better for you. It will all be about where the shifter is located in your interior. Plus you do not have to worry about clearing the transmission mount with front mount area. There also are plenty of inexpensive truck hurst shifters. The generic comp + uses some shorter arms. The 70 Bbody shifter was a one year only and the arms effected how the long pistol grip shifter throw was. So you did not bust your knuckles in the dash. Brewers site has good info looking at the parts in the various sections. Will bring you up to speed real fast

As far as the bearing retainer on the front, you will need to measure what you have and match to bell housing. The key is bearing size: small 307 or large 308, and bolt pattern dia 3.70 or 4.16. There are small dia bearings that used the large dia retainer 4.805. So you have to look. Plus brew has plenty of billet retainers to help you match. Your combo might not work, but it may also be easily doable once you see what the trans has under the retainer.
