I have always wanted a blasting cabinet. I occasionally ask to use the one at my buddy's shop, but hate asking

Anyone have a recommendation on an affordable unit?

I am trying to decide on a bench top vs. floor type

how big are the items that you would want to blast ,how much room do you have and what is your budget and don`t forget about the size of your compressor ,you can also search your area on craigslist for a blast unit used

I built mine. Looks and works like a professional unit. If you have a table saw and a weekend you could do it. Mine will easily take a wheel rim or bucket seat. I built it more twenty years ago and use it nearly daily as I work on my car.
I could send you pix and dimensions of it if you want, but only if you’ll actually do it. If you’re surfing for random info I’ve got things to do.

Sounds like that is a good way to go, for me at least. Rather make my own than go with eastwoods. Hopefully the OP can use your advice as well. Can you post some pic's of the unit you made and maybe just a brief overview of how you constructed it.

Yup. Gimmee a few minutes to run out to the shop and take a few pix. I’ll be right back.

I've been using a cheap hopper fed basting gun with play sand and just shoot parts in a bucket or crate in the yard. Its works suprising well, but it's probably about time to step up the game...

If you only have a 5 gallon compressor, I doubt you could blast anything major so I would just pick up a benchtop unit at HF, and use a cheap vacuum hooked to it for dust collection. I've seen the tabletop HF cabinets as low as $40 on sale so it isnt a major investment & I think it'd work for what you need it for. Also, depending on your CFM, you might be able to get away without attaching a vacuum as you wont have a lot of blast time anyhow with you 5 gallon reciever so you need to stop & wait for air anyway so the dest will settle also...
If you want to update later, you can always do so as space, time & money allow, and the tabletop unit can be stored on a shelf for smaller jobs. The bigger the unit, the better dust collection system needed(as well as CFM).

I had a hard time fitting it into a photo, but here it is.
More then twenty years old, used nearly every day.
I did it, you can do it. Two sheets of plywood, wire shelving, and a gate latch. The tempered glass was a shelf I found at the dump. Painted orange because that’s what I had for scrap paint.

Harbor Frieght blast cabinet, 60 gallon air compressor, water traps and your set. It’s tight for doing 15 inch rims, but for the price, it’s money well spent.
