Anyone ever use an out of State body shop to do the work on your car? I have a guy in N.C. He says he can pick the car up included in the price. Of course, I'm going to get local estimates as well, but I'm curious how much cheaper N.C would be instead of up North.

I would be leary unless you know the shop, or it is one of the well known shops that does high end restorations. The further away the shop, the harder it is for you to stop by and check on progress. Especially if things start to drag out. If things go bad, think about how hard would it be to go and get your car that might be all apart.

Out of state would be an option Only and ONLY if they had a stellar reputation to complete on time and within a reasoanble range of the quoted budget

That said,

IF ( god willing it never happens )
I will haul mine to NY state where a good friend of mine would get the job
And not worry about it 2500 miles away

This is when I bought it. It was sitting in a hanger in a small airport for a few years. Hasn’t been on the road since 1984.

Most of the cars I have worked on were from out of state .
He gave me a good price, I think. He is asking $25 to basically do a full resto including doing the interior if i send him the carpet and seat covers. Once I get the car back on its feet I'm gonna try some local places. But now I have something to compare. He says he will even come and pick the car up. So it's :praying: Lets see what happens.

I would be very careful!

It’s a common story these days for cars to disappear along with the shop.

I would learn how to do the work myself before I did something like that.

We really should start a thread called “Please help me throw my money away.”

That's what I'm afraid of. I'm not saying I'm going to do it, I was just looking into to.

There’s just something about body men. I think it might be all of the fumes. (No offense meant to present company of course.)

Just look at the famous top engine shops. Indy, Hughes, etc….
Most people have a positive experience but not all, and the ones that aren’t positive are horrible.

Now imagine that scenario with your entire car.

I say keep it close.

Most good body shops are booked out months, so the fact that he will come get your car and is at a very low price seems desperate and a red flag. $25 is a good paint job let alone a full resto. I recently had some work done on my Charger by one of the best shops in CO and it took months and cost a lot but you get what you pay for. There are some great shops in NC and SC that I would trust but I know they would charge way more than $25 for a full restoration, more closer $100.

post up some detail pics of the car........ people here will give you honest opinions and share their experiences......... 25K doesn't go very far, and that number for a "full resto" is a red flag in my opinion

FULL RESTORATION is extremely vague.
I would ask for a COMPLETE LIST of things that would be done.
Examples:
Car completely gutted.
Heater box done with new gaskets, heater core checked.
Dash, steering column removed and painted.
Console dyed, sail panels, door panels and other mouldings
K member removed and front suspension detailed
Among other things.

25K just gave him access to your butt cheeks.

are we actually talking "restoration"?.........IMO, each individual system of the car is it's own little restoration, and need to be dealt with separately...........

25K might get you quality body and paint, if the car is apart and doesn't need any major surgery......

Major Surgery, no. It has allot of small spots. The frame is solid and there is a little rust in the 1/4's. I picked up some rust free doors.
