Got tired of the old push mower and spending 2hrs on the lawn.

I bought my mom one of those when they were branded Troy-Built.
It's been decent and is now over 15 years old.
It was a customer return and was $200 off the SRP of 1200.
I nagged a little and got another 50 bucks off.
I recently got it back as she now has an electric push mower.
(She's 85 and refuses to let me pay for a lawn service)
Here are some pain points-
1- Oil drains right onto horizontal deck surface.
Who designed that?
I added a flex line braided compressor drain kit.
That solved that. Couldn't just add a straight pipe, as the engine is at an angle and a pipe would have hit the battery.
BTW- there is no oil filter ??
2- Steering rack gets dirty, wants to get stuck at full lock.
NOT what you want to happen to your 85 year old mother.
I was able to grease it a few times and make it a lot better before the rack wore out.
There is a rebuild kit available that I believe comes with an extended lower shield.
3- After 14 years, the deck rusted out.
It's pretty thin gauge metal. It started going on the top and eventually went all the way through the side.
This caused the deck to warp and catch the blade. I was able to stave it off for another season by putting a bolt in as a spacer under the rear pivot.
I couldn't justify scrapping it since it runs good and couldn't find a replacement deck...until I cross refenced the part number.
Turns out there's a Cub Cadet model that uses the same deck.
Prices were all over the place and as high as $400, but I found one for $210.
Haven't installed it yet.
4- The "safety" cutout for backing up SUCKS. It's easy to disable, though...just unplug it from the reverse lever area.
The chute safety switch is also prone to slipping off the chute. I disabled that, too.
Wait- maybe the reverse wasn't that easy. I now remember taking out of the switch area and wire tying it closed.
5- The reverse lever knob gets loose and falls off.
I cut threads on the shaft and that allows me to screw the knob on further and much more positively.
6- The "brake" pedal sucks and is easy to have your foot slip off.
I haven't fixed this yet as its going to require welding.
7- The parking "brake" can get stuck. It's on the extreme rear corner and prone to rusting.
I spray it with lube every so often after it stuck the first time and a hammer was required to free it.
