On my 67 GTX the stop lights stay on. It seems the knuckle on the master cylinder push rod just barely touches the switch when pedal is not applied. There seems to be a lot of free play in the pedal. I can place my foot underneath the pedal and lift it a good inch. Manual drum brakes by the way. Is there a spring missing under the dash to hold up brake pedal?

Yes, there is a spring up under there that attaches to the top of the assembly. There's a little slit in the top of the bracket that one end of the spring attaches. Then the other end of the spring goes around a circular part of the pedal. I'm going from memory here and this is one of those instances a picture is worth a thousand words. If nobody responds by the time i get home from work, I'll post a picture.

Non power manual brakes do not have a spring......

You need to adjust the switch by loosening the bolt....

Agree, no spring. Adjust the drum brakes as that will have an effect on pedal throw. Also crack the bleeders to ensure no air in wheel cylinders.

I added a spring to my setup as my pedal didn't always return to the stop (front disc conversion, non stock MC). It doesn't interfere with function and it works.

The spring you refer to here is only a anti rattle spring. Does nothing else.

I installed a return spring on my 65 Satellite manual brakes for this reason
