I have an on going thread on brake problems (Smokin Brakes) but have a different question on brake shoes. I found rear shoes for the 66 Charger that have the correct location for the springs and e-brake hole. Meaning it has a hole and not a slot for the cable mounting. But when I ordered front shoes I was given the slot type which means I would need a longer spring to mount them. They were also a different part number but look the same as what is on the car.

So...the question is are the 10 inch drum brake shoes the same front and rear? And if so, how do we get the front shoes to do more work that the rear? Is it in the wheel cylinder size/bore?

If so then I'm reasoning I can go back to the parts store and ask for another set of the rear shoes. Of note, I found one of the self adjuster springs loose in the front. I believe it's due to the spring location and the amount of tension on the adjuster spring due to the different shoes.

Inquiring minds want to know. Can't trust the parts book at O'Reillys.

Front shoes for any given diameter would generally be wider than a rear shoe.
They would not generally be interchangeable.

b-body mopars have 10x2.5" front and rear.

The aftermarket is superceding parts numbers and they are giving out either type of shoe for all cars. How about the mid 70's cars that get a hole instead of a slot shoe? They cannot put their brake lever in those shoes at all.

SORRY steve340 —- in this particular case , you are INCORRECT…….

On this particular application , they are 10 “ x 2 1/2” for Front & Rear —- and they ARE the same brake shoe….

The Front Wheel Cylinders ARE 1 1/8 “ Bore , and the Rear Wheel Cylinders ARE 15/16 “ —- ONLY and DEFINITIVELY….

The problem you are experiencing Mariposa Mike , is that the parts store can only provide you the current Chineseum garbage superseded / slotted brake shoe —- that is their severely compromised situation……

As Scott / R413 is typing out to you presently also……

The GRRRRRREAT NEWS is that I have the 100 % Correct Brake Shoes —- and in *** N.O.S. *** Asbestos *** with that Round Hole up top that you need and require…. And
Being *** N.O.S. *** Asbestos *** ( outlawed to MANUFACTURE in 1993 due to Anti - Asbestos Laws … )
They are the softest , smooooooothest braking system known to mankind !!!! , so you are actually ecstatic that you don’t have to deal with the current Chineseum garbage , incompetent world…..

P.M. me , as per forum rules , if interested….. Craig…..

Thank you all for the great and comforting info. Since I have already put on rear brakes, which had the correct hole/location, would it make any difference if different material shoes were put on the front? Or should they all be the same material to function normally? Trying to save some knuckle busting more than money but I want the brakes to work correctly. I believe I can return what I have and just tell them get me another set of the rear brake shoes.

Plain and Simple —- if you use the Chineseum garbage of today , you will rip the brake drums to smithereens— that is how they ATTEMPT to stop…..

Since *** N.O.S. *** Asbestos *** is 50 times better than the current Chineseum garbage —-
You make the call…..

Do you value braking ???
