04EA57D4-06DC-40D3-9744-214A9E82D4AD.jpeg So I bought this 1970 satellite 383 and I really love the car.
Thinking of doing the steering gear box and power steering pump but would like to know how to test them first
Is there a procedure to test these ? I read you can adjust the gear box but I’m thinking if it needs adjustment it’s probably bad already

If I replace them it would be with over the counter stock parts.

Looking for some good old school advice
    Thanks guys

Give Steer and Gear a call, see what they suggest.
I've used two of their boxes and they work well.

Steer and Gear can rebuild your box to stock specifcations or send you one and you send back yours as a core.
You didn't do any research at all did you?

I didn’t research anything mail order, custom or rebuilding because I didn’t want any more downtime.
I think the stock would work for daily driving normal applications. Is there’s a way to test out my current one ?

What are you trying to test exactly? If they aren’t leaking oil and they are working, why mess with them?

my question is how do I text them or know they are still good ? That way if they’re bad I can be proactive and replace them before they break down

if they aren’t leaking oil and it steers fine then I wouldn’t worry about it. There isn’t much in the way of testing that can be done. Do a good visual on all the connections and check all the mounting bolts.

basically the testing would be to raise the front end, start the engine with hands clear of the steering wheel and see if it moves on its own, either left or right. If it does there is an adjustment that can me made to the steering box.

            Here are some ideas;

            1. center up the wheel, turn it one direction counting the revolutions, then recenter it and do the same the other way and see if they are the same

            2. turning the wheel in either direction should be smooth

            3. if you let go of the wheel, it should not turn on its own

            4. the wheel should never turn by itself at any point during the rotation in either direction

            5. as stated, it should not leak

            6. it should not be making any noises

            7. when you turn the wheel, the wheels should move smoothly in that direction

thats about it, if it passes all of that you are good

            Awesome
Thank you I’ll definitely try that. I drove the car today and it felt great I just like to be proactive. Nothing worse than having that one part you didn’t replace after a job

since I want to replace the headers with the stock manifolds and the oil pan gasket I figured do that too but I’ll try this and see how it goes
Thanks a lot for that info again
