I know similar things were going on in Ridgecrest Ca back in the 50s. The County Sherrif actually helped the racers organize 'The Dust Devils' Racing club and start sanctioned drag races at Inyokern Airport. They were the longest continuing operating race club until the FAA came in and gave the airport an ultimatum to make expensive improvements to their local airport, or stop allowing the Dust Devils to hold races. Sad.
Pasadena is the long time home (since 1946) of Blair's Speed Shop, owned and operated by Don Blair until his death in September, 2011. The shop is still around and has "grown old" with all of its clients - today they build motors for guys like us who used to like to go fast on the street, but are smarter (more careful?) today. I'd bet you dollars to donuts that Don Blair was one of the guys cited that night. Pasadena and the surrounding area has a huge muscle car / collector car community that survives to this day. I personally know of 2 Pebble Beach Concours winning "100 point" cars from the area, as well as a collector who owns 6 original Shelby Cobras of various varieties. The Early Rodders meet at 7:00am (Early) at a local movie theater parking lot in La Canada (nearby) and there are often more than 50 cars there - probably 40+ weekends a year!
