That “SP” in the name stands for “Six Pack”, a reference to the three twin barrel carburetors fitted to the 440 cu. in. V8.
The 383 blocks are about 10 lbs lighter than a 440 and the torsion bars are smaller. Hard to believe they handle better.the 383 cars handled better according to road tests.
