Hey guys. I am almost at the end of my wiring upgrade goal of the year. I have almost every harness replaced with M&H and i figured i would go ahead and get a new starter solenoid from year one.

I thought i picked the right one based on the description, but after wiring it up per the diagram and how it was setup before, the car wouldnt start.

I confirmed the connections, made sure it was done properly, but nothing. No click, no tick, silence. I tossed the old relay back on and it fired right up.

Any thoughts on what i did wrong? This was the part i tried to use:

And a pic of what i was replacing.

Is your car a manual trans car? I ask because the old starter relay appears to be for a manual trans and your new one for an automatic. In your photo you need to run a ground wire to the upper right post on your new solenoid. If you notice that post on your old solenoid is grounded to the case that grounds it when you mount it on your firewall or fender.

You may very well be right. No experience myself with manuals.

I have been having issues also with the relay sourced online, dont remember from where. Once every few days-weeks I have to get out and wiggle the wires to get the sucker to start. Not consistant at all and has not left me stranded YET. Probably just going to go to NAPA and get the Standard brand and take a close look at it to be sure it is made in the U.S.A. Seems like when the car is warmed up no problems just after sitting. When I get off my *** and get a new one I will crack the old one open and see whats what.

Thanks guys

Interesting observation! It's a 4spd. I wired it the same as it was in the car previously. Heres a pic of it before i took it off the car. I do believe it had a wire going from that bottom right (of new pic below) blade connection (top right in original picture) to one of the mounting bolts as part of the harness. Maybe i didnt have it connected well or something. Ill give it another try later this week and see if im missing anything.

That Y one relay you posted is for an automatic. NG442 is for 64 to 69 manual trans, is your car 71 or later?

Appears the car in question is a ’73 or 74. The Year One application is correct. Originally, on manuals, the same relay as an automatic was used, relay grounds through a clutch pedal safety switch. The relay will need to be grounded if clutch safety switch has been removed. That said, if you replaced the new part with the old, no other changes, and it works, the new part is defective.

Thanks guys, yes it's a 73 road runner. I rewired it exactly the way i had the old one done, with that split one grounded. I do not have a clutch safety switch installed.

I was trying to figure out the differences between the options available. None had my year or trans exact, so i was trying to match what i have as close as i could. Thanks for the info! Ill try it again and if no joy send it back.
