I definately agree- if you can't "afford" a tip, maybe you can't afford to be in a place where you are served your food and beverages.
I believe it's the size of the party that determines the "automatic" gratuity, at least in FL, and it is 5 or more.
I spent five years doing building maint in a 1000+ room high end resort complex with three restaurants.
That put me acutely in tune with the hospitality industry.
I tip great for great service, voice my appreciation loud enough for others to hear, and even have been lnown to call the manager over for a direct complement on an outsyanding employee.
On the other hand, if something sucks (including the service), or an order is wrong twice- something's coming off the bill.
The food is actually kind of an incedental cost, whereas the labor, even at sub-minimum, is the major expense for restaurants.
However, average service gets an average tip.
I also know people tip the person who empties their trash, but not the one who fixes their a/c. Even if it's 110* and there's only one chip bag in the trash
...and bet you didn't know the housekeepers make more than the maintenance men. At least once you get past entry level.
