The car in question is a 71 Charger. It is column shift. I drove it Saturday, when I got home, the shifter was floppy. I thought my linkage had came loose. When I checked the shifter tube had slipped down, I could tell because of the paint line. I slid it back up and all is well. What holds it in place? Is the c-clip at the end of the column? See picture

There is a set screw under the shift handle/lever . You will have to remove the shift handle/lever to access it.
