Yup proven technique. The overlap was removed after the cut and weld. Really worked out well
 
So you cut it then spot welded it In small sections. What are you using it small diameter cutting wheel? Due tell.
 
I used 4 inch with 5/8” arbor. Cut about a foot at a time trying to keep heat from building up and pushing the inside cut away overlap away just enough to clear my buttweld clamp as I worked my way down
 
I grabbed the pic's off the net. A guy named Chris did a photo tutorial and that's how he did it.

Here's a video of the overlap cutt and butt technique and how you angle the cutting wheel to make the gap smaller.
