for those using the smallest extreme energy cams xe256 and xe262 in sm blks.
..have you found them to be noisy?
thinking these may be good choices for street only style builds

One guy on the A body side has the 256 in a truck.

Says he likes it.

I have the XE256 in a 1986 LA 318 with EQ heads (so 1.6 rockers), 4 bbl carb, 904 trans in a 68 Coronet Wagon with 2.76. I like it and it is not "noisy". 15" vacuum, 850 rpm idle, decent low end torque for the 4000 lbs I'm pushing. It was a Comp Cams recommendation.

i see so many builds use cams with long duration for that nasty idle and am thinking
that many are disappointed with the performance. Those style cams make power at hi
rpm .were we never drive on the street...they are for racing with carefully selected gears
and converters.

I have a 256 in my 318 truck and love it.

My machine shop guy says most he sees over cam their engine and aren't happy and blame him for a bad engine. His recommendation is something like, whatever the cam book says and what you think you want go one size small for a TRUE street car. A hot rod is different like a race car is different.

I spoke to Herb McCandless and he said there is no such thing as a street/strip car, it is either a car driven on the street or it's a car built for the track. Putting his thoughts together with my machinist's, two men I highly respect, I've changed my thinking on the engines I put together and choose camshafts carefully.

With the 323 truck engine on Comp Cams Camquest program it shows about 300hp and 380tq which is great for a heavy vehicle. When it had the AFB carb on it and floored with the windows open it sounded like a muscle car, which one of the neighbours loved.

Oh, no valve train noise and smooth idle.
