I shouldn't have sold my Standard breed i had, Just needed a buggy..... and maybe some chrome wheels.. Anything but black! I don't know if where your at around Pittsburgh but here the Amish is alll over, Horse crap on the road is nothing new... Ive seen buggy's absolutely destroyed here from accidents.. Now there supposed to have lights on them, still hard to see at night but helps warn ya.. I know what it cost to feed two horses.. Just cant go that slow lol.

The Amish don't own automobiles, but it is common to see them riding in other peoples' vehicles. Some even have made a business of offering rides, for a fee, to them. Why will the Amish ride in automobiles if they will not own them?

Maintaining Amish standards, but accepting some modernization to meet needs of living, requires compromise that must not disrupt the social structure. By rejecting certain types of modernity and accepting others, some Amish appear to the outside world to be contradicting themselves - hypocrites. However, from the viewpoint of Amish culture, there is no contradiction. One of the more pronounced inconsistencies is the use of an automobile...although he may not own a car, a member may accept rides and willingly hires an automobile with a driver to transport him from place to place. There was little hesitation when the Amish decided no to car ownership. It would separate the community in various ways. If only wealthy members could afford it, the car would bring inequality. Proud individuals would use it to show off their status, power and wealth. Cars would speed things up dramatically, disrupting the slow pace of Amish living. So, they will use them but not own them, for then things will surely get out of control.

Well i can answer some of this, They believe that they cant own things but they can have or let others help them such as rides, things like this.. How its different, i don't know because going without is the reason to begin with, doesn't really add up lol. There's different secs ill call them and i don't understand it completly but some allow more then others, I buy lumber and slab wood from one Amish man, he lives in the dark, yet he has a diesel motor running his sawmill.. His boys go nuts over cars, its not as cool as it once was but for them to see a car it was neat to watch them.. Sometimes id bring a bag of candy for them, they are real nice folks.. They make a lot of homemade goods and sell to town folks to help with money.. One thing i really admire is there ability to work together for the good of the family's, If one would be in need the rest are there to help, to watch a full size barn or house go up with like 50 Amish at one time working together is something to see! There just isint time for it all but i agree with driving, they are a real danger here, one horse came into my sons side of the road, the Amish lady told the cop just that or he may have got fined.. Funny thing is, the Amish guy wanted my kid to pay the horses vet bill.. Going a bit far there, you hit me and then charge me? Don't think so. Thanks for the link, i have an eye appointment but ill read it, Living where we do we meet a lot of them and for the most part they are great folks, they seem to get away with things you and i cant, but i just don't know to much about it, i do know the Amish of this part of the state is different then other parts im told in how there allowed to live.. I do worry about hitting one all the time most do around here.. I guess i am agreeing with you, yes, they do contradict there selves, but there government within our goverment much different and i guess they have to follow rules like we do. kind of in a hurry, hope sp ok... Just wanted to help clear up a little as far as why they cant own, but can use..

We have a bunch of them where I just moved to. No issues, seem to be good folks. Drove by their area last week and noticed they have larger windows in their homes, and our local sect, no window dressings. They are allowed to ride in cars, use a generator for pumping water and other chores, and have a public phone outside where it is accessible to all. Enjoy this Family Guy clip.
