thanks in advance

I have seen kits for this. Turns the open rear into a locker. Not sure if they're made for Mopars. Try contacting Randy Ring and Pinion.

Hi Mike

You bet it's possible and how you would go about it all depends on your level of skill and ability. To remove and refit third member from/to the housing is not particularly hard. In a few hours, the average home mechanic can have it out and back in again. However, to dismantle, reassemble and set-up the third member is a whole different exercise. You need good skills, some special tools and workshop equipment, patience and loads of time. Oh, and lots of money too.

To add a sure-grip carrier, you have many choices ranging in type and price. Whether you are or aren't undertaking the set-up work yourself, you can't go past Cass at DrDiff A Mopar specialist and a great guy with good pricing.

Like I said, messing with diffs ain't cheap. For example, to convert yours you'd need AT LEAST, the new carrier (min $395), bearing kit ($85), ring and pinion (min $185 unless you plan to keep and re-use your old ring and pinion IF they are still OK). PLUS labor to set it all up if you can't, and I can't imagine anybody doing it for less than $500. Most would be likely to charge much more. A question for Cass. The alternative is he sells an all brand new 489 case 3rd member with either 3.55 or 3.91 ratio ready to install for $1375 - DrDiff New 489

There are lots of diff shops out there, but not many that truly specialise in Mopar. Cass does and he is a class operator, so I'd speak to him first, even if you then get other quotes and possibly decide to go elsewhere.

Hope this helps.

If you are a hack with an ARC welder, you can have a "Lincoln-Locker" in just a few minutes.
I've considered this for otherwise UNdesireable 2.76 and 2.94 3rd members.

I couldn't agree more with what Frank says about Cass & process.

You could also go a little further and spring (extra $180)for a Eaton Truetrac .
No clutch plates to change (maintenance free ).That's what I got but haven't run yet but had great feedback about .
Mine was also a open unit so the decision was a no brainer.
Good luck

I bought a sure grip from Dr.Diff. still haven't found the time to remove my open
and install the sure grip yet. He was very helpful and the part arrived quickly.

X2 Very knowledgeable guy to work with.

X3 about Dr. Diff. Cass is a great guy who really knows his stuff. One of the best vendors out there imo.

Dr Diff is a good guy to deal with. Gave me a great price on drum to drum Dana. Course I have not bought it yet since I dont have much play money right now. Ron

Your best bet is to just buy a Sure Grip center with the right gears already in it. They sell for about $400-$500 and that's a bit more than the labor costs alone to rebuild one.

I changed my SG to a Truetrac and it works just as well as the SG with less maintenance.
