I installed a new converter and there is a 3/8 or wider gap between the flex plate and converter mounting pad. I started to bolt them up but I am afraid that it is going to pull the converter off the trans pump gear (not sure that is what it's called) because the converter moved forward.

Nothing is ever easy!

I have used washers to take up a little before, but 3/8" sounds like a bunch. Do you use a midplate? The convertor should not be bottomed out in the transmission when you installed it did you put it all the way in and then pull it back about a 1/4" ??

I'm not sure what the gap should be but there always is a little gap between the convertor and flex plate until you bolt them together. You could always call the tech line of the company that made the convertor and see if they have a spec for that. This may be a stupid question but the tranny is bolted flush to the engine, yes? Good luck.

Ok, I was unsure of the gap measurement so I went and re measured. It is under 1/4. I can move the converter a 1/8 before it bottoms out on the crank.

I did install the converter all the way so I guess I can pull it out some. The tech line instructed me to use a washer to take up the gap some. Sounds like I may not need them now since I told the tech guy it was a 3/8 gap.

The trans is bolted up tight. Not a dumb question at all because the obvious is the stuff I miss.

you should be fine, with an 1/4-1/8 in.,
better to ask then screw something up, now have fun
