Need help, please. The 68 Coronet 500 I have has a corroded fender tag, missing the lower right side and partial bottom. It is basically missing the production date and shipping number located in that area.

I can find the shipping number on the rad support and trunk lip but armed with this shipping number and the sequence number (194531) from the VIN, can I find out the production date? Car was built in St. Louis.

Thanks.

If the tag is still attached and unreadable from the top but still all there, you can remove it and read from the backside. There is also a date code stamped on the front of the engine crossmember that was stamped as it was assembled. It is the same size as the hand stampings on the engine and can be light, 3 digit day of the year followed by the last digit in the year.

By saying the "engine cross member" you mean the k-member, correct? Thanks for the info. When I said its missing that part of the tag it is literally missing that part of the tag.

The shipping number is worthless. There is no known order or system to that number for 1967-1968 in St. Louis.

I'm not clear on the VIN: is it 194531?

With that VIN the build date is either Tuesday January 9 or Wednesday January 10.

Send me a PM with more or different info and I can help out. Dan.

Yep. It is located directly under the engine facing forward. Let me know if you have trouble seeing it and I can post some pics of mine.

What is the number on your rad. support?

Even though it is called the shipping order number on the broadcast sheet that number is the sales order number not the shipping number. Prior to 1969 models this number was used for the rad. support and trunk lip hidden numbers. This number also contains the the scheduled production date (SPD) and you will note a break in the BS form after the first three digits and those first three digits ARE the SPD. I believe they changed what part they put on the rad. support and rear trunk lip throughout the early years but on my 1966 it has the full number with the SPD included. What is the number on your rad. support?

Thanks! detmatt1, the next time I can get to the K-member with a scapper I'll look. I know from a past car I had that there is a number stamped there.
Thanks! 68X426, I will check the rad support this weekend. Yes the VIN# is WP23H8G194531. I am going to get a repro fender tag since mine is missing the build date and ship number from the tag, so I need to figure the build date out for a correct tag.
