Correct steering box

I have a 69 440 charger with an Automatic Transmission. The steering box needs to be replaced but the garage said they can't see what make or model the existing one is.
Does anyone know what the correct box would be for my car?
 
There was only 1 Chrysler p/s box used.
 
This one. Used from early 60's all the way till they stopped doing rear wheel drive cars. Also used in the B-Vans to the early 90's. If you're going for a stocker, buy from Firm Feel, Redhead or Steer and Gear. They truly REBUILD the units. Unlike parts stores and some other sources which use suppliers that will only replace a seal if they can get away with it. The kicker is the amount of useable cores left for these companies to work with. The internal main gear units aren't reproduced, so they have to find the best of their core selection on those plus find the best housing. Many people talk about having a dead spot in the box when going straight. Thats worn gear teeth. If you want a new box, Lares[ which I just put in my 67 wagon] or Borgeson from Peter at BAC[ have that for my 65, but have not used it yet]. Many people love the Borgeson, but it is more than the Lares. Borgeson is smaller than stock, or Lares, and may fit better in your car with less hassle.

Power Steering Box

All FFI Power Steering boxes are thoroughly cleaned and inspected; the cases are machined for roller bearing sector supports, and the worm gear assemblies are resized. The box is then fitted with Firm Feel's exclusive reaction springs, ranging in three steps from slightly firmer than the OE police box to two steps firmer yet, depending on your needs. Measure the pitman shaft out the bottom

1972 or 1973 said shaft is larger than the earlier ones

Otherwise the boxes are 100% interchangable
 
There is an existing one on my car that the garage thats working on it can't identify.
They said they would have to order a new box which may not be correct and would work out just over $1000 shipped to the u.k

No its in the Garage being worked on at the moment. I thought a new one would just bolt up to what is now there but apparently it has to be the correct type to fit up to the existing parts
 
What’s wrong with it? If it’s just leaking it can be resealed and seals would be a lot less in shipping.
 
My Dodge is a 77 van. It wandered all about. I discovered this was a common problem with the camper vans. An Irish guy with a steering box company said he was familiar with the problem and could fix it. I did not know about new replacement boxes at tne time, so I paid him $450 and he fixed it.
But, If I had known about Borgeson and others, I think I would have bought a new unit.
I adjust my box at the beginning of each year via the alan screw.
 
You can have Steer N Gear rebuild this box and your pitman arm at the same time. Their quality has been inconsistent lately. Money is better spent on a Borgenson upgrade.

Search for the Borgenson threads. @Kern Dog is a great resource on these, also.
 
There is a date code on the side of the box thats faces the engine
Might be tough to get a picture of on a car with headers though
But I think you can see it with good lighting from below
 
I would just order a seal kit from rock auto or one of those rebuilders mentioned and trust it will work.

I would guess there are 2 seal kits available - one for the early (small pinion shaft) and one for the later (large pinion shaft). A 69 Charger should have the larger one.
 
Thats the oe box. Considering your logistics and shop issues, I would shoot for the Borgeson box from BAC. Hit Peter up. Sending something that heavy across the pond more than once is not a good idea.
