Been out of the loop for a few years and have a guy that wants me to do one for him. Used to charge 100 bucks just for labor on setting up one then went to 150. That was for a new ring and pinion and didn't include parts costs and was wondering if anyone has had one done lately and what it cost. Thanks.

Kit is around 100, and then your labor, so I would be around 250!

Forgot to add the cost of the crush sleeve eliminator kit which about 30 bucks.

Cass (aka Doctordiff) would be able to tell you exactly what to charge. Give him a call or email.

My buddy just got quoted $550.00 for setting up an 8.75. I believe that included a bearing kit and labor because I know he will supply the gears and case, etc... To me that seems pretty high. For a Dana 60 his brother got quoted, I think, $600.00 or more. Those as I understand it are much more the PITA because the carrier shims to set backlash are under the bearings.

Yeah, it was $200 for bearings and $300 for labor on the 8.75". $700 for the same on the Dana, but that was with the rear end removed from the car and brought in separately! Pretty steep. Another local shop wanted more for the same jobs and they are way shadier than these guys...

Today I was quoted $200 by one shop and $250 by another to have my Dana 60 set up with my spool.

Thanks for the replies! Last guy I charged 125 each for two 3rd members (he was a reseller) and I had to remove and press on new bearings on the carriers and pinions, machine the cones on one and by the time I got done with them, I wasn't exactly happy after doing all that work and especially so after he bitched about the price being too high. I do good work as I've never had one come back for any reason but doing good work for peanuts has become old.

Last year I had 4.10's installed. I brought the center section in to him. Disassemble and clean. Set up ring and pinion, install new bearings and seals and press fit axle bearings $275.00

Did you supply new bearings and he removed the old ones and pressed on the new ones etc? I figure my time should be worth 40 an hour at least. Cleaning is a given and some of this stuff comes in nasty as hell. I usually tell people if they take it to the car wash, they can save a few bucks but they would rather me be the one to deal with the sludge lol

I only charged my buddy to $50 bucks set to his 8-3/4 as he brought the carrier to me and I installed the new ring and pinion with new bearings and set it all up. The Dana's are harder then the 8-3/4 as you have to shim most settings but its is much easier if you have the dummy bearing kit and all the right pieces with the kit. It lets you get it set up right and get all the right shim sizes before the bearings are pressed on. My brother has the kit for the Dana's. Ron

If you are too cheap you will not be respected
Just be fair and the ones that bitch
You do not want them to be friends

i would say 200/250 would be good . you goto a shop around here it would be 300 / 400 at a shop

That was labor only. I supplied all the parts. I do live in NJ though!

I paid $500.00 for 14 bolt in my truck to set up new ring and pinion. not cheep now a days.

I made a set of dummy bearings for the 60 and 8 3/4 long before you could buy them.....at least the vendors that I was buying parts from didn't offer them 30 year ago. Know anyone that has a dummy for a Dana 70 pinion? Hate to buy a new one for just one job.
