How to i tell if the 383 crank im using was in a manual or automatic car? What do i need to do to use it with a automatic.------thanks

You can use a stick crank with a automatic. The stick crank is drilled in the center for a pilot bearing. BUT still has the Auto converter Pilot made in it.

The manual trans crank has a deeper hole in the pilot bushing area to allow for the input shaft pilot. The bore for the bushing is usually the correct size so really it's the depth that needs to be changed. If you end up drilling it deeper make sure you don't go so deep that you break through the oil cross drill in the rear journal. Make a drill bit stop! I have done this myself on a lathe using a steady rest so I recommend you find a lathe or a machine shop.
