How do you richen the secondary mixture? Would you tighten the secondary air door so it wouldnt open as quick so the fuel would be flowing more before the air door started letting the air through? Having a hard time with detonation when all the way wide open, even after having the distributor on a machine by a proffesional. I have fooled with it on my own for a while before trying the distributor machine. I can be cruising along at say 50 mph and tromp it all the way down without it dropping to the passing gear and it will ping. I can do the same thing but just tromp it maybe 80% into the secondaries and it doesnt ping, but give it that last bit to where the secondaries are all the way open and it pings..
Its right at 9.5:1 using 91 octane pump gas. Its got a heavy elongated spring and a lighter spring in it. 34 degrees total. If cruising at say 45, and i kinda ease into WOT slowly, it doesnt ping, but stab the throttle all at once and it pings. I can stab the throttle to about 80% and no ping, but tromp it that last little bit all at once and pinging..Like its not getting quite enough gas thrown to it at once that it wants. There is absolutely no bogging ever at all, it runs great otherwise.

It could be the advance is coming in to fast what distributor?

I’ve had to cut the total timing in my stock 440 back to around 33 to stop pinging. I used an advance plate to limit centrifugal advance in the distributor so I can still run a lot of initial timing which keeps it responsive at low speed.

Its that one we discussed..I just want to make sure its not a ''leaning out'' issue before sending it to you..Im starting to second guess the thought of it coming in too fast because of the way it acts..ok,,all of what i will describe is in 3rd gear, automatic 727 and NOT dropping it down to 2nd.. ok, cruisng at 45, stomp it to the floor and pinging..ok go back and do it again, but instead, stomp it to 80-85% and NO pinging..im thinking that if it were coming in too fast it would ping when stomping it to 80% also because theres not a lot of RPM difference yet when first stomping it down..its like when the secondary opens that last little bit it pings. Now, if i am cruising at 45 and gradually ease into it and let the rpm's gradually build into WOT, it barely pings..

I think it is what we talked about. I would like to put a bit heavier spring in it since it is fine gradually only when you hit iot it happens. Getting there.

Its strange though, when i hit it WOT and it pings, i can back off the throttle just a hair, i mean a hair , like 1mm, and the pinging stops, rpm BARELY drops and the timing im sure doesnt retard any with only letting out that hair, so if it was coming in too quickly, wouldnt it still be pinging when letting of just a hair being the rpm didnt hardly drop?

You would think so. I wish you were closer I would put it on a scope and see exactly what is happening.

I know..i dont know what to do..it sure performs great though besides the pinging! It likes the timing! Being i set it at 20 btdc initially, where does it end up at total mechanical?

You have the sheet I sent you add the mechanical and vacuum together then subtract 20. That should be the total ATDC

Where did you hook up the vacuum advance hose to?

Just a thought, have you tried using "real" gas instead of the ethanol crap at most stations? It's been a while but @moparedtn posted an app to find real gas near you. That may help.

I hooked it to ported like you said. I tried unhooking it and it still acts the same as far as pinging. With the vacuum hooked up it cruises much better than it used to and there is no pinging at cruise or anywhere other than WOT

always use the highest available octane, usually 91, besides, i thought ethanol had a higher octane rating?

New gas sucks in these cars. You should get away with that in a 9.5 to 1 motor.

The problem is, if you don't use that gas right away, the ethanol starts to evaporate and your gas turns to crap in a hurry.
