I recently purchased my first mopar (72 satellite) and noticed the fuel gauge wasn't working and the car had a after market mechanical oil gauge and oil gauge. I would like to at least get the fuel gauge and temp gauge working. The lights in the dash and the voltage gauge are working.

I took out the leaking mechanical oil gauge and put in a stock electrical sending unit.

I checked the power running to the boots on the back of the fuel gauge and I getting a flashing or pulsating light on my tester. I was wondering if the sending unit in the tank could be bad.

I know it would be hard to discribe what the wiring should look like on the back of the instrument cluster, but if anyone out there knows where I could get a picture of the wiring, I might be able to figure it out.

Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

The rear wiring if you need it is the 3rd up from bottom of the first set of 1972 Model Years Schematic B.. If you save these to your computer you should have a program where you can make them larger or smaller, or print them out.. I didn't want to take the room for the rear wiring and don't know if you need it so with that... Check all your grounds out good, Mopars love grounds, it very well could be the sending unit is bad also, im not the expert so while you wait for one i thought id mention these things. Good luck

The pulsing you are getting could be the voltage limiter working. If you briefly ground the sending unit wire the gauge should move pretty fast to "FULL" or "HOT". Don't leave it grounded too long. If no fuel gauge action then your float might be sunk. Pretty common problem actually.

I had the same issue with my gauges....fuel and temp were both locked at the low end (non-functioning). I took the dash out and replaced the circuit board and voltage regulator, now both work perfectly fine...I ended up going with a solid state regulator vs the mechanical ones that are OEM.
