Bought my 79 magnum GT XE brand new in February 1980 for a grand total of $6150. It listed for $9538.75. Made an offer of $6200 for the car. The salesman laughed at my offer but said he would run it by the manager/owner. Owner came out to talk to me about the car, claimed I was "stealing it" from him at that price, but he finally agreed to sell it for $6200. I told him that WAS my original offer before his salesman laughed at me, if he still wanted to sell the car it would be for $50 less due to the salesman's attitude. I drove the car home that day for a total of $6150. A few months later, the dealer went bankrupt and out of business. However, I did NOT feel any remorse about the purchase negotiations!

Thanks, it was a great car for the time. I put 200,000 miles on that car but it was starting to nickel/dime me constantly. So I finally said enough, and sold it (basically gave it away) in about 1991 or 2.

Big mistake, one of those I wish I still owned.

Same here. I should have not sold my 79 300. Great car. My big mistake !

That's funny you mention owning a 79 300, that's a really beautiful car. It ties into my Magnum story as well.

When I was looking for a new car back in Feb 1980, I was bouncing back and forth between TWO local Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth dealerships looking for the perfect ride. One dealer had the Magnum in stock, and the other dealer had a new Chrysler 300 on the showroom floor. I test drove both at least once, visited each dealer MORE than once looking the two cars over trying to make a decision on which to purchase. I don't think I could have made the wrong decision buying either one, but as I recall I finally decided on the Magnum because it "just felt a bit sportier" than the 300 did. Maybe it was the T-tops on the Magnum versus the sunroof on the 300? Maybe it was the bold "GT" decals on the Magnum versus the more subtle pinstripes of the 300? Whatever, I finally decided and bought the Magnum and really enjoyed that car for many years before making the mistake of selling it. Yet I've always wondered what that 300 would have been like.

not my cup of tea but some where sort of cool

The B bodies sure got homely by the late 70’s.:)
In the overall scheme of things back then, not really. The design and intent was still performance, and they managed to incorporate styling into federally-mandated bumper requirements. Unlike the crap and garbage from GM and Ford, with their hideous bumpers and vomit-inducing styling. Yeah, Ford with their pickup-truck style step-bumpers, like a porch attached to the front and rear of the car

Purchased my '79 300 in October of 1980 for $8,688. The MSRP was slightly over $10,300 (if I recall correctly).

Edit just in case anyone thought I was joking about $8,688 (in relation to thread title of 8888)
