I’ve been doing bodywork since the 70’s never took the time to measure the thickness of any sheet metal but have found the solid feel is mainly from the placement of body lines and reinforcements and rust usually comes from lack of finish the back side and where dust accumulates with the lack of proper drainage to dry they didn’t start doing anything like galvanized steel or trying to seal the inner panels until the 80’s .
I did get straighten some 34 Chevy fenders for a friend one time and those were the thinnest metal I’ve ever worked on, to strengthen the edge they wrapped it around a piece of wire, talk about cheap, now trying to take a dent out of the fender of my 41 power wagon takes a sledgehammer , but as for changing the thickness of the metal in our cars every couple years I think is unlikely
Just my opinion from working on them for 40 years
