I recently had my car at a garage for a leaking oil pan gasket. Later I realized the dip stick for the oil was missing it used to be orange and I thought longer but the readings were correct. I have a 1971 Plymouth 440 Super commando. The garage says they don't have it! I ordered a new one thru summit which calls for 23 inches long. I put it in and it doesn't register oil level I added here and there couple qts but still nothing. So I drained it and added the 5 qts. Still doesn't register on the dip stick. What am I missing please everything I searched online says 23 inches but my gut says it was longer. Its a standard pan as well. Any suggestions. should I get a longer stick and just make the correct marks on it.

23 " should be correct for a car engine. If you dumped it then refilled with 5qts and can not see it on the stick there is something else going on.
If you have a brand new bright metal stick and fresh oil it can be hard to see.
Get some extra light on the stick and look.
Some of the trucks had and longer set up.
Look around the engine compartment, fender edges, steering shaft and box , cowl, you may spot it.
Shoot a Pic of your pan bottom as to were it hangs from the k frame skid plate.
Also a pic of the stick tube.
If you have a 4 or 5 qt capacity pan you would use 5 or 6 qts with a filter swap.

Does your engine have an aftermarket deep oil pan on it?
