So my 440 is at the machine shop now, and its going to cost me a little more than expected. So i was thinking about cutting costs on the top end, using stock parts and doing what i can myself. I have a set of 346 heads that have been ported and have dual valve springs. The heads are clean and appear to be ready to run. Just that the guides feel a bit sloppy to me.

I was wondering is it possible to buy oversize valves to make up for the wear? Maybe hone the guides myself and install new valves? Just so I don't have to spend a bunch of money again at the machine shop. Has anyone done anything like this or have any advice?

I work in a machine shop first off, i absolutly HATE when people do what you are suggesting lol it makes my life so much more complicated. i know money is an issue but if you want the job done right and reliably then you need to have a professional do the job, if the guides are worn then that may be an indicator of another problem in which you wont be able to see without disassembly and proper cleaning, magging etc. my honest suggestion is hold off on that part of the project until you have the funds or shop around and see if another shop can do it at a better price

I figured I would get that answer. Thought I would ask before I tore into it and ruined a perfectly good set of heads lol.
