Is a 971 pan completely nessasary?

I need to replace the pan on my 440 out of my 74 this winter. Was wondering if its nessasary? Having a hard time finding a source for them new. But the pre 71 pans are cheap and readally available. Thanks

I have a 69 RR, just changed out a 971 (7qt) for a 401 I had to drop the center link bar there was no other way it would come out or go in. I changed it for 2 reasons, first I wanted the correct number oil pan in the RR, also, I don’t run the car hard for the most part just take it to shows and once in a while get on it. If you’re not racing it stick to the 401. If for some reason to decide to change it to the 971 I have a 7qt Oil Pan (971) with the Pickup tub and Windage tray for sale

Thats great, but in a 74 everythings different, k member and steering wise. than the 68-70 so in a nutshell whT BB pan will fit my car. That i can get affordably.

None of the older stock pans will work including the 187 which WILL hang up on the ISO K frame. The 971 sump is smaller at the front by almost if not a full inch to clear the K.

So the SUM-G3543 will work. Thanks guys

after looking again, between the two pictures, i would call summit to make sure that the summit pan has "exactly" the same dimensions as the 971 moroso pan (which is just a MP oil pan with a moroso sticker on it).
