Do you pick up hitch hikers?

I used to occasionally pick someone up without any problem. Recently, however, my wife ordered me not to give anyone a ride, for fear of becoming a widow. So now my reason for not obliging anyone who asks is the truth, I have to follow mommies orders.

Back in Los Angeles in the 1980's I was out of gas one week and made a sign "downtown" and stood on a freeway onramp with the sign. Someone gave me a ride downtown that morning where I was scheduled to take the written exam for becoming a United States Border Patrol Agent. Eventually I was hired and spent 5 years working in El Paso, Texas, which was a lot of fun. Kind of a cross between playing "hide and seek", "cops and robbers", and "cowboys and Indians" and getting paid for it.

El Paso is fine when living on a budget, $43,700 for a 3 bedroom, 1000 square foot home in 1988. Worth about twice that now.
