Here's the deal. My son transferred colleges and the University allows scooters under 50cc's on campus. Being this is Colorado Springs riding a bike up these hills is only for the strongest rider at 3mph in a low gear most mountain bikes don't have.

Anybody know squat about scooters? Yes I mean the gay European things you would ride on vacation. Do they have gears? Can they climb a hill. The only 50cc anything I was ever on was a 1969 Honda Mini trail they were cool (3 speeds) but very expensive these days.

They are all over town here in Fort Fun and it's not just limited to campus. They ride them on the bike trail network all the time. It's certainly flatter here than in CS.

So what's the real question Steve? Trying to soup one up or what?

they are all over town here in vegas.cant climb a hill worth a dam though.the few hills(pretty dam small)we have slow those things down to a crawl.its a bitch to pass them when they are doing 10 mph in a 35 zone because of a small hill.

I don't know much about the 50's, but I had a 125 when I was stationed in Bangkok that I am sure would have no problem. Reason for driving it was traffic, before anyone gives me a hard time. Haha. A 50 sounds pretty small though to be doing anything besides city driving, but like I said I am not familiar with those. And no, most do not have manual shifting nowadays. They have something called CVT. Can't remember what it stands for, but I am sure you can google it.

They're kind of like dating an ugly women ...., best ridden only after dark. :icon_mrgreen:

Go hard like sting. Quadraphenia style

Look for a Honda Metropolitan or a Yamaha Vino. They are very close to a Vespa but are reliable and about half the price. The Vino is or was a two stroke so I don't know if he wants to deal with that, and avoid a Metropolitan II, as the older Met 50s could do around 40mph but the restricted II could only hit 25.

I had a few mid late 80's - mid 90's Honda Spree's {POS} for running around the pits, very manly...LOL
they would go like 27mph {on flat land} all out with my 250#'s...
My girls loved them, but I wouldn't recommend one ever,
BUT surprisingly it/they was/were pretty tough/rugged though,
I never really had anything breakage or serious repairs,
just regular maintenance stuff, tires, plugs & oil,
just ride it tell they die, get another one off Craigslist for $200

Aprilia SR50 is top of the heap. Ditech models are direct injection. All have front and rear disk.

Easily derestricted in several areas and can do 70 if you want them to.

Parts and repair may be an issue, but can be found.

Yamaha Zuma has been injected sine 2012. Not as fast but can also be derestricted (easier on 2 cycle carb model, though).

Has rear drum but not bad to change.

Parts and service easy to get.

I wish I had kept my Topper and the Cushman but times moved on and I got a HD FL07_1958_02_06_rushings_cushman_scooter_ames_cycle_1_c[1].jpg1965-Topper[1].jpg

CVT is the continually variable transmission, like a big cone. The under 50cc is the campus rule. A CVT may climb a hill but we have serious hills here. I found a 1963 Honda CT trail that had two sprokets therefore 8 gears. I'm hopeful on that. The Chinese crappers are $300 at 8 years old. Nice scooters of a good brand are $2000 used.

I have the same thoughts on the subject as Hemi Rebel just obtain 50cc badges or whatever and slap them on a more suitable performing scooter.

They make good shortstops.
