Hello,

I am attempting to do a drivetrain swap in my 1971 Charger. It currently has a 318/904. I want to swap to a 360/727. My question is, for the 727, does the tailhousing length matter? I was told that it does and have passed on a few 727s because they have the long tailhousing (18”) and have been told to only try and get the 11” because that is the only one that will fit properly. Is this true or am I overthinking it? In my area I can only find 727s that came out of vans for the most part.

Thank you

I think the long tailshaft is what you need;same as all the b-bodies. You will likely need a different driveshaft also.

I did something very similar to my 72 Charger. You'll want the long/er tail shaft for the 727. While the trans mount is different in the 71/72 from earlier models, it's the same mounting point. Lastly, your drive shaft will potentially be the wrong length.

Thank you all for the responses. Just to clarify. The long tail housing lengths, such as the 2 in the photos, are what I want, instead of the one with the short tail housing length with the bolt on yoke.

Thanks again

You don't want the bolt on yoke. Then you would need a 2 piece driveshaft that has slip joint in it.

Going to a 727 from a 904 you're going to need to change the slip yoke anyway because they are not the same size.

Just get a long shaft 727 transmission and grab the driveshaft from it as well. You're definitely going to need a shortened driveshaft.

Do the research of how to properly measure the correct length you'll be needing once you get the engine and transmission in the car.

Any driveshaft shop can fix you up with what you will need for a yoke or new driveshaft. Some shops prefer to make you a new one vs shortening an old one.
