I remember when eBay started, and you could sell pretty much anything including guns. Then the folks out there in San Francisco got supposedly worried about liability, but like most folks out there just wanted to do away with guns, and they banned the sale of firearms.

So, since I've been unemployed since my company decided to close up shop and move to Texas, I thought I would try my hand at making some spare bucks using craigslist and eBay, and selling car parts, aviation stuff, and whatever else I could make a deal on. Last week, I found a guy selling an old M-1 Garand parade rifle that military drill units use, so I bought it. And the next day I found a second one for sale, along with a Crosman M-1 Carbine BB gun from the 60s/70s that a lot us probably remember from back in the day, and I bought those too.

I go to sell them on eBay, and all three auctions get shut down. Why? Because they consider parade rifles and BB guns firearms! I told them the parade rifles aren't real rifles. They just look like real rifles. eBay finally allowed me to list them if I showed the muzzles were painted blaze orange and I stated they were for US customers only! Yeah, I'm going to put orange paint on a chrome barrel. Really shows you how ignorant of firearms these people are.

As for the M-1 Carbine, I wasn't allowed to sell that because it's a "pneumatic" BB gun. I asked them why it's okay to sell airsoft guns, which are also pneumatic BB guns, and they said they classify BB guns differently than airsoft guns. Yet again, another example of the blind stupidity and ignorance these people have.

But here's the funny thing. I could have sold the M-1 Carbine for about $100 in the condition it was in. But due to eBay rules I couldn't sell it. But what I can do is disassemble the rifle and sell every single part, and I am in compliance with the rules and will likely make about $300 selling the rifle as parts rather than as a whole. Sometimes the ignorance of others pays off. :)

I'm not a big fan of Ebay, but it's kind of hard for me to blame them for not wanting to deal with the purchase or sale of firearms online. If somebody gets shot with a gun purchased on Ebay, you can bet that the victim or his family is going to go after Ebay because that's where the money is. Besides that, the myriad of gun laws in this country vary so much from one place to another (or even one day to the next) that it's very difficult to always be in compliance with the law if you are in any way involved in the purchase, sale or transportation of firearms. JMHO.

Yep, that's what eBay said. The truth is the sale of guns online, specifically through the mail, doesn't differ from state to state and is regulated at the Federal level. Anyone selling a gun that they are going to have to ship has to receive a copy of a dealer's FFL, signed in ink, and they have to ship it to the FFL holder who can then transfer the firearm to the buyer in accordance with state/local laws.

Use Gunbroker and leave eBay in the dust.

I don't know how Gunbroker stays in business. So many of the dealers on there are asking silly/stupid prices for their guns that generate zero bids.

Volume, and the folks who are selling stuff at good or great prices. I've purchased plenty of stuff from gunbroker.....but it's not current production, toys, or useless junk.

I haven't bought anything off that site since 2007. Seems like once Obama got elected and the gun paranoia started, those guys have been asking ridiculous prices. I'm glad the Jacksonville area hosts so many gun shows every year as the dealers there are much cheaper to deal with. I usually pay about half what those fools on gunbroker want.
