I have an Eddelbrock 1405 600CFM carb. on my warmed up 318. It's running way too rich, black soot in the exhaust pipes, smelly in cab, so I got a Eddy calibration kit #1479 and can't figure out the combinations for the springs, rods etc. I thought I would start with the leanest combo for a few minutes, check a plug and go from there. The tech line is not open till Monday and I want to work on it today. Can someone tell me what would be the leanest combination. There seems to be not much on instructions. I searched the Eddelbrock sites for instructions and have not been able to find any. Thanks much, Dave

Idle adjustment screws on the front of the carb (I have the same on my 383). Warm up the engine, air cleaner in place and ensure that the choke is fully open. Turn one screw clockwise until it starts to chug then back it out 1/2 turn. Do the same for the other side. Idle speed is set with a different screw located at the front of the accelerator linkage. Set it at around 850 rpm. Accelerator pump rod linkage is most likely in the center hole. If you're experiencing any stumble or bog when you hammer it from a rolling start move the linkage rod to the upper hole.
I also replaced my step up springs from the 5"Hg (pink) to 8"Hg (natural). If you have a vacuum guage, your spring choice will be half the number of what the vacuum your engine is pulling at idle.

Edelbrock's manuals are some of the best in the industry. Super rich running is probably due to an incorrect float level or very low vacuum, unless someone "messed with" the metering rods / jets. Try here:www.edelbrock.com/automotive/.../tech-center/dl/carb-owners-manual.pdf
