I am planering to buy an electric choke kit for my Ed 1407, or should I go for the old school wire instead? Car starts and runs like a dream when I pull the choke by hand on the carb on a cold start but it won't hold and it is not so convenient to pop the hood for every start up. How does the electrical work? Is it engaged if i don't touch the gas pedal? Ign on. How does it disengage? Blipping the throttle? Does it has some kind of bi metal spring that responses to temperature?

an electric choke works very simply. when the car starts ,,,its cold....the electric choke is cold too...and has a heating element in it and as the car warms up....so does the choke heating element. when cold...the fast idle cam on the carb engages....as both engine and choke warm up, the choke bi-metal spring expands. to disengage the choke and fast idle cam...just goose the gas pedal and it should idle normally...PROVIDED it is adjusted properly and the engine had been given sufficient time to warm up.

Yes, it's a bimetal coil that responds to temperature from a heating element. The electric part is a resistance heater like the dawg said and as long as there is power to it it's working. Even if the engine isn't running, but power is connected, the choke will respond.
