One of the projects I'd like to tackle this spring is to repaint the engine bay. It wasn't properly prepped when it was repainted and the paint has lifted in a few spots, especially around the firewall/fender and around the driver strut tower. I have a 1 car garage and no space to do it myself. I want the repaint done right this time. The car was painted by someone hired by the previous owner.

My idea of 'right' includes pulling the motor (repainting it), and stripping down to bare metal in the entire engine bay. Given the limited space (and time), I'm having a professional do it. I'm not 100% sure of paint code but it looks like alpine white. I would want to have a spectrometer to color match.

Can I get an idea on cost to do an engine bay resto?
How many hours to remove the motor and accessories?
Any recommendations on a reputable shop in the Philly area?

My car: 68 Roadrunner, 440 6-pack, with power steering.

not sure of the hours, but paid a guy $1000.00 to repaint/ redo my engine bay, but also did the complete engine, front suspention, i paid $8000.00 for all the work done i supply the trans, and paid for the powder coating

Engine bay work

I had two shops do my work. the engine builder pulled the engine and while the engine was out it went to the paint shop to paint the bay. After the engine bay was painted it went back to the engine builder to reinstall the engine. Paint shop cost $700 and includes a change in colour. Engine work - rebuild, blueprint, oversized KB pistons, port and balance $5,700 plus taxes. It is now back at the paint shop to have the rest of the car painted charger pearl black.

I guess the only problem i had was if you look @ the engine bay its red, but if you look @ the car, its 07 GoMango so i did it twice, but was totally worth it.

truth being told, i drove it with a red engine bay for about 3-4 years, it gave me enough time to realize i didnt want a red car ! friends tried to talk me out of the color i chose, glad i didnt listen.

I really like that orange color. Curious why you changed the color? Also Im getting an estimate tomorrow for a repaint.

I'm going to catch a lot of grief for this but since my engine is out and new crate engine comes painted I need to strip the entire engine bay with a wheel and it's getting spray can satin black (Hemi Orange Car)

Would love to have it sprayed properly while it's out but I figure maybe a day and a half of labour for me to strip and paint myself will make it at the least more presentable because I do not have any room left in the budget for it to be professionally done

You can still get a good job done and with the same color as your exterior if you are willing to put some time and muscle in it. Get the exterior paint matched by a professional paint shop. They can bring a spectrometer out and get an exact match and put it into single stage paint cans. Prep with the wire wheel as you have mentioned, spend some time sanding and prepping, prime the surface, then spray your color matched cans.

If you do as above, I highly recommend using a primer recommended and provided by the paint shop that mixed the color spray bombs. FYI last time I had custom spray cans mixed they cost around $15, but that was 10 years ago.

Thread hi-jack over. :)

I agree 100% . all that time and effort with an empty engine bay just to spray bomb it flat black just makes no sense to me, and it is ugly in my opinion. I have never spent over 200 bucks restoring engine bays. I personally would rather see a slight mismatch in color than a black spray bomb any day of the week, unless it is gloss black on a black car. most colors are easy to match.

In the interest of not hijacking the thread as far as cost goes Am3rican you are looking at a days labour to remove the engine and components (having this done by the body shop) and I would guess anywhere between $500-$1000 for the prep & paint on top of that.

Here's a picture of my bay and I hate the fact that you guys are right about spraying it to match the car... I had to repaint the entire back half of the car this summer so I even have the extra they gave me to touch up to colour match.

I guess I'm going to have to consider that option.

'GOON, having seen your engine bay now, it might be the one time I'd think going black would cut it. The black-out scheme on your RR would make it look decent - because the body is black on the fenders bleeding into black could look fine.

But I still like going with the body colored engine bay! :)

By the way, nice collection of 60s iron...I'll forgive you for the Camaro.

I was kinda thinking the same thing... with the stripes it would blend nicely and also contrast my freshly painted new Orange engine block.

I wish I could say those cars were mine.. it's a firebird beside me that belongs to the owner of the shop... The Savoy on the other side belongs to another forum member here (cool tubbed car) and there's a 68 Pro Touring Charger in there with me as well

Here is one for you white 6-pak engine compartment.
