There is a small copper line that runs from the expansion valve and penetrates a hole in the large hard line that connects to the evaporator and has a small rubber seal. That seal is hard, split, and won’t ever seal. Where can I get another seal? Can I just solder it in place so it can’t leak?

Don't heat that line! It senses suction line temperature and controls the expansion valve. Just get some of the sticky tape/caulk that is made for this application.

The well that the copper tube goes in is not open on the bottom end. Only on the top where the tubing slides into to well. It is for sensing the temperature inside the larger tube. The rubber seal you speak of is only a dust seal. I just used a small bit of air seal to pack around the entrance. Something like silly putty would work just as well.

All above are correct. Cork tape, foam tape, plumbers putty. Anything that will stand up to summer underhood temps.
