Florida makes license frames illegal

I bet almost every state as a statue that prohibits covering any part of a license plate. Inspection laws in NH also say that no part or the factory glass area can be covered by stickers, decals or other items and they can fail you for it but almost every vehicle has something stuck on it.

Not technically, in Mi. Very specific wording, but I've never seen it enforced. If I were a cop, I'd pull over every tinted plate-cover car. Lights, for that matter. You can't even see some tailites at night.
What is not legal? Not covered and no obstruction. Basically a rubber pad to prevent scuffing/abrasion.

Legal...till it's not.

Thanks Jer. RIP buddy.

I always thought that was kinda odd.

My thoughts were generally- so LEO can tell if your in your own neighborhood.
Not crazy about that.
In Florida you have had the option to have your county or Sunshine State for many years now. Being a dealer, I would always ask as some customers didn't want their county on the tag

It's a newly worded, strengthened law as of October 1.
Supposedly the fines are very hefty, possibly up to $500 for 1st offense and it goes up from there. I believe they can even lock you up for it, maybe not for the 1st offense but?? With all the stupid **** people are doing, it's ridiculous to make this a priority. How about we get the homeless out of the intersection harassing drivers for change.....yea, they can't pay a fine so we need to go after the people that can. I've heard the reason for this is actually the police tag scanners they all use to track and surveil us can't read the tags efficiently

That's why I said it was made optional in the OP.

IMO it'd be silly to fine someone for covering the county when it could also be any number of things there, depending on type of plate.

...including "Endless Summer".

"Up to" a $500 fine and/or 60 days.
Pretty crazy..... I think that's more than passing a school bus unloading kids at the bus stop. I'm glad I'm not in the business of selling tag frames to car dealers for advertising purposes. Can you imagine how many potential new criminals the state has due to this??

Released today due to backlash by constituents-

FLHSMV said the new regulation doesn't prohibit the use of a license plate frame as long as the frame doesn't obscure the visibility of the alpha numeric plate identifier, or the decal located in the top right corner of the license plate.

So, if you're using a license plate frame in the state of Florida, you're allowed to do so, even if some of the bottom of the license plate is obscured.

"The Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles does not consider the information on the bottom of the plate to be a primary feature of the plate," the FLHSMV said in a post on X. "A plate frame that impinges on the information at the top of the plate is permissible, as long as law enforcement is able to identify the state that issued the plate."

First 2 paragraphs are what I thought it should be/have been all along.

Bottom paragraph quietly opens the door to pull over and fine out of state cars that obscure what Florida wants to see.
