Flowmasters have been very annoying lately.

All I hear inside my car is this constant drone sound especially when at idle in drive. I can't even tell my car has a cam in it except for the sound coming from the headers because inside my car all I hear is the steady drone sound like a constant vibration or something. I have 3" 50 series Flowmasters with tailpipes on a 540 hp 440. Is this drone sound only because my car does not have carpet and headliner to absorb the sound? Or is this just the way it is going to be with Flowmasters? I have to get rid of these mufflers. The dirt track cars at East Bay Raceway all have a really deep and throaty exhaust not at all like the tin can sound of a Flowmaster. I think I need to go there one weekend, get a pit pass, and ask a few drivers what muffler they are running, then make the switch.

As long as you have Flowmasters ,you will have the problem no matter what series. There are better mufflers that are quieter and flow better.

John, If your car doesn't have carpet or a headliner, it's effectively a tin can (forgive me Mopar gods). There will be alot of resonance inside. When you're at the track you're hearing the sound from OUTSIDE the cars. Have you ever had somebody else drive your car by you and listen to it from outside? I'll bet it sounds good.
Best advice is to cover the floors with a stick on sound deadener and a good quality carpet. Same for the roof interior, door skins, etc. Makes a HUGE difference in driving comfort. You can actually hear conversation and the radio. Sound deadener is available from Summit, Jegs, E-Bay, etc. Easy to install and you don't have to use the most expensive brand to get good results. I'd send pics of mine but I'm not at home till Monday. Let me know if you would like me to post them then. BTW my son's name is John Thompson. You must be a good guy............

I like my Thrush Super Turbos. they are almost the same as the dynomax Turbos. Nice Crisp snap while idling...

In other words my car will sound annoying inside regardless of muffler choice until I can afford to lay down some insulation and carpet and have the headliner reinstalled?

Exactly...............................BTW, DynoMat is the expensive stuff.

I changed from a 40 series which sounds like what your doing to a 50 series that has 3 chambers instead of two and the difference inside of the car is unbelievable. that and a true X cross over and I love my car again on trips :) There is absolutly no "drone" or resonance inside!

Looks like I will not bash the Flowmasters anymore then for a while, until I get some dynomat and carpet installed. But I still want to find out what those dirt track cars run for mufflers. They all sound the same so they must all run the same muffler, and it is not a Flowmaster sound at all. It is deep and mellow, and quite pleasing to my ear while still being quite loud. But they would most likely sound like garbage inside my car for now anyway.

The 50 series are quieter and yes dirt cars are different from street mufflers.Sound barrier is a must!I ran 40's on my red 63 Fury with dumps at the axle.I used the stuff Eastwood had on sale.Compared it side by side to Dynamat,it looked the same but better price.I liked it and cabin noise was minimal. Then again I didn't have an in dash tunes, just listened to the Mopar under the hood tunes! But I like "Two Lane Blacktop" the movie. No plot, talking, romantic BS. Just racing!!Kinda like ol' **** movies LMAO

Lord have Mercy. Anyway, just looked at rules for those limited late model and open wheel modified I like the sound of so much and they run a Schoenfeld #112535 muffler mandatory. Basically, they use 350ci Chevy motors that make either 330 hp or 400 hp depending on the weight of car. So, those mufflers on a 440ci motor making 543 hp would be way to loud. Here is a link to what those mufflers look like. http://www.hoseheadsclassifieds.comClassifiedDetail.cfm?ClassifiedKey=53506

I love flowmasters myself but I had a dynomax max round straight through on my turboed neon and it sounded awesome for a 4cylinder course it was a 4" dumped exhaust but made the ground vibrate like a v8 does

Before you buy Dynamat, look up Fatmat. They make what seems like an equivalent for much less $$.

The placement of the muffler makes a difference too. Generally, the closer to the engine they are, the louder the sound and placing them in a different location can also cure a drone...

These are 3" Flowmaster 50's following a TTI X-pipe and 3" exhaust to the bumper. The entire interior including doors, quarters, firewall, sheet metal (in place of fiber board) back seat/trunk divider, inner roof and floor is lined with Dynamat--and before installing the headliner, an additional 1-1/2" fiberglass insulation was sandwiched between the headliner and the Dynamat--and this car is squeak & rattle free and as dead sounding as a cemetery. I've had many people ask what brand mufflers I'm using with positive comments (it's all a matter of personal taste). Good luck with your decision; Bob

Yeah I love the Flowmaster sound. That is why I have them. Just thought maybe there was no way to prevent the drone inside the car. I cannot wait until I get the money to finally do all the paint and interior so that I can line my entire car with dynomat as well. I also have a sheetmetal firewall because of a trunk mounted fuel cell. Thanks for all the encouraging words you guys. I'll eventually get there.

You can try resonators like the dyno max race bullets, maybe that will get rid of the drone.
